July – August 2010

Kier have been busy on site, carrying out the piling operation. We were pleasantly surprised to find that the piling would be done with a flight auger, so that noise was not an issue. The piling operation saw 254 holes being drilled into the ground and then filled with cement.  These cement shafts will support the building load. Ground beams are currently being laid, so that the footprint of our new building is emerging and in particular we can already see the outline of the new kitchen and the main entrance.

June 2010

The official ground breaking ceremony took place on 25 June after the contractors, Kier Southern, moved on site to begin works.  Eastpoint company secretary, Jean Roost, said: “The trustees and staff have been working hard to support local residents for over 25 years.  It hasn’t been easy trying to deliver what our community needs, from our current premises because the building itself is such a drain on the charity’s resources. We have been working towards getting a new building for many years, so that we can continue to provide services to local people and we are very proud to be able to secure the future of the Charity and it’s activities for the next 25 years  by building this new centre.  It has been extremely hard work for all concerned, so we are all very excited to see Kier on site and we look forward to opening our new building next Summer.”

May 2010
On 17 May 2010, following the OJEU tender process, KIER were awarded the contract to construct the new Eastpoint Centre building. KIER plan to move on site on Tuesday 1 June, to carry out enabling works that will include erecting hoarding, and making the access road from Burgoyne Road fit for heavy vehicles.

February 2010
The Southampton City Council Archaeological Unit carried out an archaeological evaluation excavation of the site from 8 - 17 February, because the site lies in an area of archaeological importance - it lies immediately adjacent to a Bronze Age barrow cemetery and the route of the Roman road from Chichester to Clausentum (Bitterne Manor) passes close by. The whole site was covered by a matrix of 19 trenches. Although it lies in an area of bronze age barrows, no evidence of such features was found on the site.
